Famous as the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World which unfortunately no longer stands, it is no surprise that the city of Ephesus has an interesting past.
Originally belonging to the Greeks, Ephesus really began to grow in the hands of the Romans.
There’s even a legend that the Virgin Mary spent some time here according to our guide. Doing a tour here is highly recommended in order to gain the benefit of the stories behind the ruins which remain today.
My favourite site was the Library of Celsus which has been carefully rebuilt to model its original facade.
Another extremely impressive feature of this UNESCO world heritage site is the outdoor theatre which is said to have seated up to 25,000 spectators making it one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Not bad considering this city’s origins date back to the 10th century BC!
If you’re interested in ancient history and are in Turkey, a visit to Ephesus is a must.
