Verdict: This is one of my favourite hostels EVER. A tent in the middle of the common room, a front desk made of books, a record player and a coffee shop out the front – what’s not to love? A fantastic supermarket is a 5 minute walk from Ecomama and since they have a clean and modern kitchen it is cheap and easy to make your own meals if you so wish. You can store any leftovers in one of their Smeg retro fridges too. The vibe of this place is super relaxed and pretty social.
The 8 bed dorm I was in felt so spacious, everyone was able to lie out their luggage and then some. Plus my room directly overlooked a canal, how cool!! Top bunkers also had a proper ladder on an angle meaning it wasn’t at all awkward to climb up at night. There was even a little aromatherapy touch underneath the pillows. There are no personal lockers though, but there were personal power points.
As the name of the hostel suggests this is a place all about the environment. Recycling is encouraged and therefore the showers are on a timer. It’s a rather short one which can be a little irritating but the water was hot and the mixed bathrooms were overall quite clean.
The staff were pretty friendly, I had to print a Ryanair boarding pass and they were happy to help. They also organise a hostel dinner every few nights which was 5 EUR.
Location: The red light district/main area of town is around 15 minutes away by foot. The museum district is around the same distance and there’s a lot of great Italian restaurants in this area for dinner that’ll only set you back around 10 EUR. You can of course rent a bicycle and ride to these both in less time. If you are arriving by train to Amsterdam, there is a metro stop around 5 minutes walk away and it is only one stop to/from the main station. There’s also a tram line running close to the hostel.
Price: It is not too cheap however I find nothing in Amsterdam really is. 34-47 EUR (49-68 AUD) per night for a standard 8 bed mixed dorm. I stayed here in August 2014 and a couple nights were over a weekend therefore rates can change, also depending on the season. There are also 5, 7 & 12 bed dorms available in addition to private rooms.
